Adam Carroll: Getting Past the Comparisons
County Line Magazine article by Tom Geddie, Oct 2012

"Adam Carroll came quietly out of Tyler, making his own music his own way, winning comparisons to John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, and Bob Dylan as a songwriter and performer. One critic compared him to William Faulkner and John Steinbeck. That’s heady company for a quiet, almost shy young man who, at times, seemed baffled or amused by the comparisons, no matter how well earned. ...

“I write about average, ordinary every day things in such a way that makes them extraordinary. I hope that people who like my music can recognize that quality in their own lives when they listen to my songs,” he (Adam) said. “I like poets, actors, writers, visual artists, great speakers, and off-the-wall comics. I like nature and landscapes. I like traveling and looking at the land and seeing how the land shapes the people in different parts of the country and world.” ...

As he has forged his own identity, Carroll has come to accept the heady comparisons even if he doesn’t believe them." ...

The Sound of Austin - A Coffee Table Book about Austin and its Musicians

This book by photographer Mathew Sturtevant features Adam Carroll, among 100 other portraits of musicians who define The Sound of Austin.

""Adam Carroll is a perfect example of why I wanted to do this book. Austin has a wealth of talented musicians who are amazingly gifted .. Instead of thinking Austin's best musical days are behind us, I argue that they are here and now." - Mathew Sturtevant

A collection, a testament, a love note and a guidebook, honoring and preserving the musicians in Austin, Texas.

“Austin’s sphere of influence has gone from statewide to global.” - Joe Nick Patoski

Stories About Music

by Adam Carroll and Stayton Bonner

This first-ever, new book from Texas songwriter Adam Carroll and tour-mate troubadour/published author Stayton Bonner is a 62 page collection of short stories, mini-vignettes, poems and song lyrics.

It's up to the reader to decide whether the 18 alternating entries from both musicians about the gigs they've played and colorful characters met along the way are real or fictional.

Titles like "The Cedar Chopper's Sweetheart", "Angel Wings Guitar Strings", "Playing For Tips" and "From Knoxville To Harrisburg" give an inkling of the honest, sometimes raw story content from these two acclaimed, creative wordsmiths.

Stayton Bonner's rich descriptives, "Shoulder length hair frizzed out like exclamation points" are a perfect foil to Adam Carroll's unique lyrical style, "He's a confessor and a deceiver when he howls at midnight - .. He can out-drink you and your band."

Illustrations provided by Rob Rez, a whiskey-loving Montana artist whose work is enjoyed by Missoula Independent newspaper readers and clients of American Made Tattoo Studio.

HARD TIMES CD Listed Among The BEST IN AMERICANA FROM 2010

Once again grouped with acclaimed songwriters and performers such as John Prine, Darrel Scott, Bob Dylan and Neil Young, Adam Carroll & Michael O'Connor's Hard Times CD is listed among the BEST IN AMERICANA FROM 2010 By Richard Skanse, Senior Editor of LAVA Magazine

"Honestly, what's not to love about a kinda/sorta concept album about down-and-out, run-down, low-rent Gulf Coast losers, composed and performed by two alarmingly laid-back, good-humored, scruffy-voiced troubadours? Adam Carroll and Michael O'Connor, both longtime veterans of the independent music scene in their native Texas who have toured around the country and Europe together, take turns trading tunes with the laid-back charm of a song-swap in front of close friends. It's a hoot, in every sense of the word, with the only complaint being that it all ends much too soon, breezing by in just under 35 minutes. The winning way Carroll and O'Connor chase every laugh-out-loud ode to hard luck and bar tabs "twice as long as Billy Gibbons' beard" with bittersweet vignettes about sleepy little towns and wayward loved ones demands an encore."

Adam Named Broken Jukebox Artist of the Month

Broken Jukebox Artist of the Month

Adam Carroll was named Broken Jukebox Artist of the Month for November 2010.

"This month’s artist once again comes from Texas. Carroll for me really stands out among the crowd of extremely talented songwriters from that region. His songs have a way of immediately connecting with the listener and at the same time, being completely beyond anything we could have written ourselves. The characters in his songs live in our neighborhoods but they are so elegantly presented within the song that it makes them seem larger than life."

"Once you add in Carroll’s fine guitar and harmonica playing and his off kilter vocal delivery, you have an artist that in my opinion can hold his own in any songwriting circle, no matter how high up the ladder you go. Comparisons to John Prine and Townes Van Zandt seem to come at him from all directions and they are absolutely well deserved for once. I would throw others in the mix as well, Guy Clark, John Hiatt, and the list could go on. Basically think of all the writers that get every word right and go ahead and place Carroll in their midst."
